About

Few pieces, made well. Aurena is a small womenswear label and a single shop on Colombo Road in Chilaw, and both of those facts decide what we make.

What we make

We work in short runs. A cut is made in the fabric we found, in the quantity that fabric allows, and when it is gone we do not repeat it for the sake of having something to sell. It means a piece you like may not be there next season. It also means the rail is never full of things nobody chose.

The starting point is always the cloth — how it falls, how it takes the heat, how it looks after a wash in Chilaw water rather than in a photograph. A dress that photographs beautifully and creases the moment you sit down has not been made well, whatever the picture says.

Where it is made

In Sri Lanka, close enough to us that we see the garments before they are finished rather than after. Small runs are how a fault gets caught at ten pieces instead of a thousand.

The shop

The shop in Chilaw Town is the whole of us — there is no head office behind it. If you are nearby, come and handle the cloth; it says more in ten seconds than a description can. If you are not, we ship island-wide, and the same people who fold the parcel are the ones who answer the phone.
